Subtracting Two-digit Numbers

In the following exercise, you will subtract a pair of two-digit numbers.

Things to remember:

  1. The numbers are stacked on top of each other, so that the numbers in the one’s place are in the right column.
  2. The numbers in the ten’s place are in the left column.

Steps:

  1. Start by subtracting the one’s place column.
    • If the top number is smaller than the bottom number, then you need to borrow one ten from the ten’s place.
    • Subtract one from the ten’s place number, and then add ten to the one’s place
    • Now you can finish subtracting the one’s place.
  2. Now subtract the ten’s place column.
